I'm starting to learn that structured practice can help you get better at anything {{first_name}} .
especially with beats.
I'm creating a system to help guide my practice.
I made this video that covers what I have so far, but here's a good summary;
- learn only the bare necessities of music theory, then practice what you learn by using it to imitate your favorite productions (a good cheat code for this are sites like chordify . net and tune bat . com that show you musical metadata about songs! - content creators in the producer niche also have many chord explainer and beat reconstruction videos - you'd be surprised how many gems you can find with a bit of digging)
- understand that the only important thing about sound selection is 'context.' The sounds have to make sense together (synth sounds with synth sounds, orchestral sounds with more orchestral sounds, etc).
- note: this one is a bit tough, so I'm working on a series of videos over sound selection based on different artist/producer vibes.
- mix melodies well. lol we know there's tons of videos on my full guides playlist about this and you can also get my mixer presets in the centerfold bundle. the main things to focus on are:
- EQ (get rid of low end and high end freqs).
- stereo management (reverb, delay, etc).
- leveling (melodies have wide frequency distribution, so you gotta lock in with leveling on them).
- it helps to turn ever melody into a beat. my artists get more tracks, I can release more on Spotify, and I get to practice other skills (drum programming, arrangement). but sometimes I get lazy and just use the template from the shadow multi-kit, ngl. and another good hack is sending the loops to other producers so they can make their own beats on them - that's one of the reasons I made these free loops for you 🤝.
TL:DR - chords are a cheat code when use correctly, sound selection is about having good taste which you develop through practice, mixing isn't hard and you should do it if you care, make every melody into a beat for more practice and additional creative output.
I hope this helps 🙏 - and again, you can check out the video explanation here.
blessings,
Chu
